Following the Trend of Mismatched Bikinis

It is interesting to follow the history of women’s swimwear. Some of the stylish and risqué swimsuits of the Victorian era may even draw a chuckle from the modern observer. The bikini, created in 1946 and credited to a French engineer and designer, has also evolved over the decades. A recent trend is the practice of teens and young women to couple a mismatched bikini top and bottom for a one-of-a-kind ensemble. One may never know why this trend started, but there are a few reasons to consider.

Out of necessity
Women with limited resources may have found that they could stretch their bikini dollar by matching a still usable bikini part with one from another suit. This was easiest to coordinate with bikinis of two solid colors. Now, prints are matched with both solids and other prints.

Too-cool-to-care
California surfer girls with a too-hip-to-care attitude may have found that mismatching bikini parts was a way to show that they were destined for the water with no time to spare to find matching bikini pieces. In any case, the practice has taken off around the world and led to some interesting and appealing combinations.

Whether it is a black bottom with a white top, an animal print bottom with a green top or stars on the top and stripes on the bottom, uncoordinated bikinis have created a new reason for people watching at the beach.
